LISTED below are the churchwardens' accounts used for this book, being all those which were available to a researcher when I was working upon it. I attempted in the end to read all those surviving from before 1690, a date chosen because the very large number of extant accounts which begin in the following decade would have required a proportionate amount of additional work, while those which began earlier and continued through William's reign gave me a sufficient sample for those years. My ambition was inevitably a failure. For one thing it is almost certain that more accounts remain hidden in the vestries of their native parishes. For another, and more important, over a hundred of the sets lodged in county record offices have been declared unfit for production, according to the wildly varying tastes of individual archivists. The extreme case is Dorset, where about a third of the total stock is now out of bounds, including some used earlier by David Underdown and David Cressy. It can only be hoped that I was unlucky enough to work in an interval between the imposition of more rigorous standards of conservation and the microfilming of delicate documents, although the financial constraints upon local archives make this sadly unlikely.

Nevertheless, the list below may still be useful to future researchers. In the designation of repositories, ‘L’ signifies ‘Library’, ‘RO’ ‘Record Office’, and ‘CRO’ ‘County Record Office.’ In the description of documents, ‘impf.’ (imperfect) indicates that occasional years are missing in the run, while ‘v. impf.’ (very imperfect) means that only occasional years are present. Always excluded are those spans of time for which only summary totals of income and expenditure are entered. Hundreds of sets of accounts held by record offices consist wholly of this kind, and they also are eliminated, so that the catalogue consists of detailed records of income and expenditure except in very occasional cases in which, as indicated, only one or the other survives. In citing publication of items, I have omitted those which (as in the Malone Society and Records of Early English Drama series) only concern themselves with very limited categories of entry.
