For Gill the watershed between Mallarmé's juvenilia and his ‘early works’ is easily located between April 1860 (the latest date appended to a poem in Entre quatre murs) and the autumn of 1861. But this ‘convenient distinction’ owes more to the fact that there is little precise knowledge of the poet's literary activities immediately after he left school in the summer of 1860; and, as with Johnson's ‘deux grandes constellations’, it serves to present Mallarmé 's poetic development as a series of distinct stages rather than as a process of gradual elaboration.
