This chapter sets out the two principal aims of the book, which are to propose new meanings in Mallarme's poetry and to present the development of his poetic art as a successful search for linguistic and textual mastery. It then discusses the reading of Mallarmé's poetry. Mallarme requires his reader to be hermeneutic, to seek out the meanings of his texts by ‘forgetting’ the habits of conventional linguistic communication and by gazing ‘transparently’ at the page free from all nostalgia for a beyond. An overview of the four parts of the book is also presented.
