This chapter discusses the dominating features of the two stories that follow LʼIngénu: La Princesse de Babylone and Les Lettres dʼAmabed. These stories seek to present the virtues of enlightenment on a universal basis and even provide a retreat from ambivalence in terms of the values of ‘civilisation’. As in most of Voltaire's contes, these stories feature a reality that is more remarkable and less excusable for seeming so utterly incredible.

Keywords:   Babylone, Lettres dʼAmabed, enlightenment, reality, ambivalence
