Nature
This chapter discusses schemes that may be called scientific, in so far as they seek to distinguish and explain the ages of Man in terms of natural causes. It includes a discussion of biologists and physiologists, who divided life into three and four stages, respectively. The effect in each case was to integrate the life of Man into the larger order of the natural world, as it was understood at that time.
