Markets play a distinctive role in the growth of a city. There were at least four separate bazars and markets, one each, as in Timurid encampments, in the four corners, while the fifth was situated within the main city. They were situated between the palace and the bureaucratic buildings on the one side, with the nobles’ houses and the general city on the other. Thus they symbolize the close symbiotic relationship which existed between the ruling and the mercantile classes during the Mughal period. The main market was towards the north-east, between the Agra Gate and the public audience chamber. Another market was towards the south-east. It was a four-quartered cross-shaped market, which today is erroneously identified as a sarai. The third market was near the Chishti quarters. Two markets, one each towards the north and the south, lined the two linear roads of the city.
