The logic that influences modernity is the striving for intersubjectivity. The ‘other’ in pre-modern characterization refuses to acknowledge the individual as an equal individual. In the place of sameness, intersubjectivity introduces iso-ontology, and this makes all the difference. Modernity requires deliberate interventions through farsighted and future-oriented policy measures that create an equality of status between citizens that is much more than legal equality. The criterion of intersubjectivity makes it possible to unerringly spot out the pretenders who often succeed in sullying the fair name of modernity. Once modernity is powered by intersubjectivity, one can be confident and can make choices more intelligently when faced with the dilemmas that contemporaneous tricksters and powermongers impose.
