Virgin Lands (1843–1844)
This chapter examines Margaret Fuller’s four-month trip to the West and the Great Lakes in 1843 in order to take time off from writing. She travelled to Chicago in Illinois, Milwaukee in Wisconsin, and Niagara Falls and Buffalo in New York. During this trip, Margaret interacted with several Native Americans and came to understand their situation. This experience was chronicled in her book titled “Summer in the Lakes,” which was published in 1844.
