This chapter summarizes the musical and creative influences and activities of Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock during their formative years. Born and raised in Chicago, Harnick was trained as a violinist, served in the military, and attended Northwestern University, where he wrote songs for an ambitious student revue, the Waa-Mu Show. Bock was born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Flushing, New York, where he began writing musicals in high school. As a music student the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he won first prize in a BMI contest for his second full-length musical.
