This chapter identifies the major sources and some properties of group conflict as a background to later chapters. Topics covered include the material sources of conflict, the psychological bases of conflict, and some properties of and variations in views of conflicts. It then describes several cases of significant violence between groups, past or ongoing. These include the genocide in Rwanda, violence in the Congo, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, relations between the Dutch and Muslims in the Netherlands, terrorism by Al-Qaeda and Palestinian terrorism, and the Holocaust.
