Neural-tube defects (NTDs) include a group of congenital malformations that mainly affect the structure of the central nervous system (CNS). This chapter describes the main entities that comprise NTDs, provides population-based statistics, presents advances in the elucidation of their etiology, and discusses associated risk factors.
