As Colonel William Hayward well knew the best thing that could have happened was for the 15th to be transferred from the trains directly to the ship assigned to them for the Atlantic crossing. The Pocahontas steamed carefully out of New York Harbor and dropped anchor at Sandy Hook. The Atlantic crossing of the Pocahontas was accomplished without major incident, although the constant fear of submarine attack kept tensions high. The first concert by the l5th Regimental Band at Nantes was the most memorable of the trip to Aix-les-Bains, and it was the only formally scheduled performance. James Reese Europe took seriously the band's responsibility as an ambassador of good will to the French people.
