Notes:

(1) A comparative trill chart was published by Halfpenny more than four decades ago (Halfpenny 1953: 56).

(2) Hotteterre (1707: 88) advised hautboy players to use the trills he gave for the traverso in his chs. 4 and 7, except for those on C2, c1, gb1, f#1 sometimes, gb2, f#2, g#1, g#2, ab1, ab2, c#2, db,2.

(3) There are several copies of this source, including Prelleur 1730 and Anon. 1758.

(4) 8 is mistakenly added to the trill fingering.

(5) This produces a very large interval.

(6) The fingering for the bb, 1 appoggiatura is mistakenly given as 123; probably the 3 was intended for the ab 1

(7) This fingering produces the required notes but the bi sounds strange and there is an unfortunate register break

(8) Actually given as ‡23 456.

(9) F adds I, but probably a mistake.

(10) Given as 123 467 but probably meant as here.

(11) “ Given as e2–f, but the flat sign was probably forgotten.

(12) Given as 123 467, but probably as here.

(13) Mistakenly given as g2–f#2.

(14) The dot for closing hole 4 belongs on the trill fingering, not as here on the fingering for bb,2

(15) The dot for closing hole 4 belongs on the trill fingering, not as here on the fingering for bb2.

(16) Mistakenly given as bb2–ab2.

(17) The supposed b2 and g2 preceding and following this trill are mistakenly given with the fingerings 123 and 123 4 6 respectively.

(18) Moving on hole 2 is omitted.

(19) Mistakenly given as ‘from Bb’. The a2 fingering is also mistakenly given as 1 3 instead of 12.

(20) Mistakenly given as ‘B#’ to b2; actually c#3 (hence the # sign) to b2.
