Some of the most precious and useful documents to come out of the United Nations in the past fifty years include those conventions that offer a framework to tackle oppression and discrimination, and this especially relates to children. A majority of the world's children have their childhood taken from them by economic and social circumstances. In generating the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), countries came together to define the child, and in so doing, they identified a special status and time of development that is distinct from adulthood and is considered valuable. The CRC is a crucial starting place for international social work and all services concerned with the well-being of children. The convention also focuses on children crossing borders and the particular vulnerability of those who migrate or become victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
