This chapter outlines the premise of the book. It explains that the traditional relationship between law and technology must evolve to accommodate a fundamental shift in the nature of technology, a shift that is already underway. The shift is the result of our developing “smart,” autonomous technologies which will supersede the “dumb,” passive technologies we have relied on to this point in our history.
