This chapter provides an overview of L. Ron Hubbard's life. It describes Hubbard's early education, his fame in science fiction, and his fascination with finding a technology of the human mind that led him to write Dianetics, and the founding of the Dianetics movement. This chapter also describes the history of the Church of Scientology up to the time of Hubbard's death in 1987. It provides a basic introduction to Scientology’s beliefs, practices, and organization. Finally, this chapter discusses the main features of conflicts in which the Church has been involved.
