This chapter presents an excerpt from Catherine Parsons Smith's 2000 book William Grant Still: A Study in Contradictions focusing on the George Gershwin's composition I Got Rhythm. Smith analyzes the composition and suggests that it was intact only once and then it shifted toward a black-influenced, modally inflected minstrel tune. She suggests that Gershwin was influenced by African American composer William Grant Still in his composition of I Got Rhythm.
