The Columbia Recording: A “Second Premiere”
This chapter takes up the history of the work four years later, covering Riley's move to New York City and examining works written in the intervening years. Topics include his connection via Stuart Dempster to the Creative Associates program at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY/Buffalo), which in turn led to contact with David Behrman at Columbia Records. The preceding concerts in Buffalo and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, followed by the studio recording and its innovative multitrack process, complete the story. There is critical analysis of record reviews and the LP program notes. An “exogenous” analysis of the recording's performance shows how the piece unfolds in time.
