This chapter sets out a framework for analyzing how the purposes of social practices are constructed, interpreted and negotiated in English discourse. Distinctions are drawn between legitimating and nonlegitimating purpose constructions, and between goal-oriented, means-oriented, and effect-oriented purpose constructions. The framework is applied to an analysis of two children's books dealing with the first day at school, to show how the purposes of schooling are constructed differently in different contexts and to demonstrate the uses of purpose analysis for critical discourse analysis.
