Time in Discourse
This chapter describes the semiotic resources of English discourse for representing the timing of social practices. Departing from the work of sociologist Norbert Elias, discourses of time are viewed as related to, and deriving from, practices of timing. A range of such practices is discussed, together with their linguistic, and at times nonlinguistic realizations—authoritative timing practices such as the personalized, instrumentalized, and disembodied time summons, and practices of social, natural, and mechanical synchronization. After a discussion of the contemporary management of time, the chapter analyzes two children's books and a teacher training text, to show how the discipline of school time is represented differently for different audiences.
