Epidemiology of Child Maltreatment
This chapter presents a summary of current research on the epidemiology of child maltreatment in the United States and Canada to provide a better understanding of the scope and distribution of child maltreatment. It presents definitions of terms such as child maltreatment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. It then discusses Child Protection Services (CPS)-investigated maltreatment, severity of cases of reported maltreatment, and implications for research, policy, and practice.
