Mozart's mature piano concertos were central to his musical and economic being in the early Vienna years, combining his brilliance in execution with unprecedented orchestral sensitivity, formal inventiveness, and an inexhaustible variety of mood. The dramatic qualities of the concertos, metaphorical if not literal, are often remarked upon. Mozart's first piano concertos are arrangements of sonatas, one group mixing movements by different composers, another using whole sonatas by J. C. Bach, with orchestra of two violins and bass, and thus domestic rather than concert music. Together with his first original concerto (No.5, K. 175), these arrangements provided the first-movement formal template which Mozart employed with such resourcefulness.
