Worst-Case Scenario for the Future
What will life be like in the United States in 2025 for young people? Two scenarios are presented: the first is pessimistic, the second optimistic. In the worst-case scenario, things look pretty bad. Teenagers in the future may be deprived of life options, not because of their own high-risk behaviors but because they live in a high-risk society that does not value them as individuals and offers little in the way of support. Every poll seems to give evidence of the great differences between Americans' views of their society. The country is split between those who feel that we as a nation are on the right track and those who fear that we are not. This division in opinions is true for most of the issues mentioned here: civil liberties, segregation, poverty, access to health care, public education, quality of life, and sexual behavior. This bifurcation does not bode well for the future.
