This chapter sets forth how we came to understand asbestos and its potential as a cause of disease. Topics discussed include the discovery and beginnings of use of asbestos, the period of isolated observations and the emergence of asbestos as a cause of disease, asbestos and malignancy, and the New York Conference of 1964.
