This chapter presents a paper entitled “Uniformity of Monkey Striate Cortex: A Parallel Relationship between Field, Size, Scatter, and Magnification Factor”. This paper addresses the question of what determines the three-dimensional shape of any cortical area, and how any one area of the cortex can be so uniform anatomically despite certain marked variations in function as the surface is traversed. In the case of area 17, there are variations especially in field size and magnification. The paper is also concerned with the relationship between orientation columns, ocular dominance columns, the topographic mapping of visual fields onto the cortex, and receptive-field size and scatter. It shows that the cortex seems remarkably uniform physiologically, just as it is anatomically.
