In May 1860, five Good Shepherd Sisters set out for Ireland from the French Mother House. Their mission was to establish a Foundation in the small Co. Wexford town of New Ross. The New Ross Mission was entirely begun by the Order. Consequently, it was believed by the local Sisters that their penitents were the best in the Province, having fallen directly into Good Shepherd hands. The Asylum at New Ross continued without Magdalen vocations throughout the whole of the nineteenth century, though in the same period each of the other Irish Houses produced women of this contemplative class.
