Can the 18th-century practice of reusing vocal music help us recover a lost passion setting by Bach? There have been many attempts to reconstruct Bach's lost St. Mark Passion by drawing on the compositions whose music Bach evidently reworked to create the passion in a process known as parody. But there are gaps and problems, raising serious questions about the status of a work reassembled in this way.
