This chapter argues that staff-initiated violence, including corporal punishment, should be integrated into school violence theories and research. It discusses the prevalence of multiple forms of staff violence (emotional, physical, sexual), and examines their correlations with students age, gender, and cultural/ethnic affiliation. Key findings and implications include: (1) emotional victimization impacts about a third of the students — physical about 16.5 percent and sexual harassment by staff is reported by 4-5 percent of students; (2) boys are victimized by staff more than girls; (3) as children grow older they are victimized less by staff; (4) Arab students are far more victimized by (Arab) staff than Jewish students by their (Jewish) staff, especially physically; and (5) many of the cultural effects of staff victimization disappear or are greatly reduced when SES is controlled for. What may have been interpreted in the past as being cultural may be the effects of SES.
