History and Definition of Child Maltreatment
This chapter provides a historical overview of child abuse and neglect, covering the history of childhood, US history, and key legislation. Definitional issues of child maltreatment are discussed and critiqued. All types of child maltreatment are covered including, physical, sexual, neglect, emotional, and psychological. The chapter concludes with a presentation of the scope of child maltreatment today.
