This chapter reviews cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches in MRI studies of aging. It also reviews a few recent studies using diffusion tensor and diffusion weighted imaging to investigate age-related changes in white matter integrity. Finally, the chapter considers modifiers of age-related neural decline, including those that bring bad news (hypertension), good news (aerobic exercise), and mixed news (hormone replacement therapy).
