This chapter on comparative and functional genomics discusses two components of this area as they illuminate the fate of model organisms. It shows how protein and DNA sequence information from a variety of organisms has informed the study of the origin of major domains of life and the process of more local evolutionary change. Second, it explores the use of genomic information in studying the functional complexity of cells and the patterns of gene expression during environmental or developmental change.
