The Desert Music–Steve Reich in Conversation with Jonathan Cott (1984)
This chapter presents Reich's interview with Jonathan Cott. Reich says that there were a number of things that went through his mind as he worked on the composition, and they were related to very particular deserts. One of them was the Sinai. He also remembers taking many trips years ago, to and from California, and traveling through the Mojave. Finally, there is another desert that is central to The Desert Music: White Sands and Alamagordo in New Mexico, where weapons of the most intense and sophisticated sort are constantly being developed and tested.
