The goal of IPS supported employment is helping people with severe mental illness find competitive jobs that are consistent with their preferences, skills, and experiences. After the employment specialist and client have developed a vocational profile and individual employment plan, the focus turns to finding a part-time or full-time competitive job, typically within one month of starting IPS. Other members of the treatment team (e.g., psychiatrist, mental health worker, nurse, residential worker) provide input on job types, work environments, coping strategies and supports based on their understanding of the client. Clients are encouraged to conduct as much of the job search as they feel capable and comfortable doing. Different strategies for locating jobs and employers are described.
