A Better Country
Ambrose Bierce and Sidney Lanier were the only two significant writers to serve in the Civil War who were able to live and tell us about it. Coincidentally, they both married women named Mary Day; one was called May-day, while the other was called Mollie. Mollie Day was described as being as lovely and as dark as her new suitor was fair. In late November 1874, the only real friend Bierce had made in England, Tom Hood, died at his cottage in Surrey. This began the stay of Bierce in England, although it took another ten months before he left it for good. In May 1875, he went back to San Francisco to visit his mother for an indefinite period.
