Jasmine Claude: A Study in Faith
This chapter discusses the case of Jasmine Claude. When Ms. Claude was diagnosed with cancer, she initially underwent chemotherapy to treat her lymphoma. The cancer stopped but her tumors started to grow again, and her oncologist tried different regimes to get her into remission. In her fourth treatment, Ms. Claude began to develop abdominal pain, and her oncologist and the Palliative Care Service worked to control her symptoms. She received palliative chemotherapy for several months but in spite of the treatments, her abdominal tumor continued to grow. Ms. Claude was admitted to a palliative home care program. In spite of the severity of her medical condition, she maintained a strong faith in God—a faith that puzzled as well as amazed the palliative care staff. This narrative not only describes the experience of palliative care but also tells the story of an exploration of faith, as seen within the context of palliative care.
