This chapter examines the issues and practices related to the treatment needs of alcohol-abusing populations. Emphasis is placed on the brief intervention model, an approach deemed suitable for large numbers of individuals afflicted with alcohol problems. The rationale for this model along with its task components are presented. The chapter reviews empirical evidence on its effectiveness and provides recommendations for future research. Implications for practice, service delivery, policy, and interdisciplinary education are discussed.
