Home for Christmas: Christmas Trees and Christmas Giving
With the birth of Sta. Claus in the American family tradition, Christmas turned into a home festival. This was a festival which was embraced and cultivated from the many old Christmas traditions erupting from all corners of the world thus creating the modern domestic holiday. The two most widely known symbols of Christmas include the decorative evergreen tree and the tradition of gift giving among family and friends. It is these two characteristics of Christmas that has made Christmas significant and seductive to the eyes of each and every beholder. This chapter looks at the history behind the first Christmas tree and gift giving, and the contribution of these two to the evolution of the modern day Christmas.
