Richard Rodgers and Herbert Fields were not enthusiastic about their next venture. The idea of making a musical based on Mark Twain's whimsical novel had come to them six years earlier. After seeing the silent version of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, starring Harry Myers, they had been fired by its possibilities. Before they could go further, however, they needed the permission of the lawyer who handled Twain's estate, a flinty-eyed old gent Charles Tressler Lark. Pop Fields loved the script of A Connecticut Yankee, and again partnered with Lyle Andrews to bring the show to the Vanderbilt in November. A Connecticut Yankee had a “big” score, and as a result there were quite a few cuts but immediately it became a great big beautiful hit. The critical reaction was almost unanimous.
