The investigation of an exposure-disease relationship usually begins by looking for an association between the exposure and the disease. This association is evaluated by generating some simple quantitative measure that describes the strength of their association as fairly and accurately as possible. This chapter introduces the measures of association used for this purpose and some of the impediments to obtaining good measures.
