This chapter considers three challenges that confront researchers, educators, and policymakers in considering the role of cultures, youth identities, and pathways to college in the academic pipeline problem. These challenges are examined and promising strategies for addressing them are considered, with examples drawn from a wide range of cultural communities. They are useful in addressing the five core questions of the book in the chapters that follow. The strategies are: a) moving beyond demographic categories by “unpackaging” such categories in understanding cultures; b) moving beyond stereotypes seen in deficit models and concepts of model minorities by using parallel designs; and c) moving beyond one–way “giving science away” to building cultural research partnerships. Examples of these strategies across cultural communities illustrate their applications to the academic pipeline problem.
