This chapter addresses the challenges faced by educators responsible for establishing positive learning environments for students with ASD by providing an overview of the two overriding features of ASD: qualitative impairments in social interaction, and restrictive patterns of behaviors and/or interests. This overview is followed by an examination of how individuals with autism respond to school environments, including how they engage with others through joint attention and play. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how children on the autism spectrum experience difficulties in school environments, with an emphasis on the sensory challenges encountered by these individuals in typical school settings and of how a teacher’s reliance on procedures and routines help children deal with these challenges.
