This chapter traces the history of how the author and his colleagues initially developed and validated the Health Locus of Control scales, starting with attempts to follow Rotter’s proposition from his social learning theory that the potential of a behavior occurring is a joint function of an expectation that the individual perceives control of and values the expected outcome. In a later modification of the theory, its creators replaced internal health locus of control (IHLC) as the principal expectancy construct with health self-efficacy (HS-E) but retained IHLC and health value as moderators of the relationship between HSE and health behavior. Later in the chapter, the author reviews three studies of persons with type 2 diabetes that have attempted to test this modified social learning theory, without much success, and discusses what changes might be needed to make the theory viable.
