This introductory chapter reviews research on future-oriented mental time travel to date, provides an overview of the chapters of the book, and enumerates some possible research directions suggested by the latter. Research on FMTT raises a number of challenging theoretical and conceptual questions. The chapters in this book discuss many of these, under the headings of: varieties of future-oriented cognition; relationships between FMTT and episodic memory; subjective temporality in FMTT; the self in FMTT; functional perspectives; evolutionary and comparative perspectives; developmental perspectives; clinical perspectives. Together, the chapters identify a number of promising directions for future research, including: the diversity of FMTT; the basis of FMTT; subjective temporality; the self and time; function and evolution of FMTT; and the components of FMTT.
