This chapter contains two case studies that build upon the book’s analytical framework and demonstrate the arrangement conventions of music within a contemporary film genre in Turkey known as era films (dönem filmi). Arranged ethnic music is especially important in Vizontele (2001) and Beynelmilel (2006), two tragic-comic films which explore sociohistorical themes related to Kurdish identity politics in the 1970s and ’80s. Different analytical techniques (e.g., score analysis, DAW session analysis) explicate aspects of this codified arrangement aesthetic and demonstrate the affective power and musical innovations of film music.

Keywords:   Beynelmilel (film), dönem films, film music, Kardeş Türküler, leitmotif, percussion, studio musicianship, Vizontele (film)
