Chapter 1 introduces the concepts of arrangement and engineering and the professions of the arranger and engineer as they are conceived within Istanbul’s recorded music industry. Digital audio workstations (DAWs) are central to all studio-based work and have multiple functions and relations within the studio workplace. This chapter also establishes a theoretical framework for understanding technologies within creative workflows and social milieus, which draws on recent theories and methods in science and technology studies (scripts, actor networks), relational musicology (ontology), and ethnomusicology (audible entanglements).

Keywords:   arrangement, audible entanglements, digital audio workstations, engineering, musical work, scripts, technology
