This chapter looks at Lewis’s published Diaries 1922–1927 for evidence, not about his alleged love life, but about his first intellectual encounter with the Oxford English Faculty. It is argued that Lewis’s evident discontents point to a split within the discipline that troubled Lewis and Tolkien all their lives, and that was never satisfactorily resolved.
