(p.20) 2 Contextualizing a Porphyrian Soteriology
Universal Salvation in Late Antiquity

Michael Bland Simmons

Oxford University Press

This chapter shows how the main theological theme of Porphyry’s works—the salvation (purification) of the soul—permeates what is called the Neoplatonist’s “Soteriological Trilogy”: De regressu animae, Philosophia ex oraculis, and Contra Christianos. Porphyry’s quest to find a via salutis animae universalis liberandae required many years of intensive research as Augustine states. A general introduction to the Porphyrian Tripartite Soteriology that will be examined more thoroughly in later chapters is given.

Keywords:   De regressu animae, Philosophia ex oraculis, Contra Christianos, J. Bidez, universal salvation, Augustine
