In this introductory chapter, a road map of the contents of the book is provided. The reasons for focusing the investigation of poverty and undernutrition on countries in sub‐Saharan Africa and South Asia, with contrasts to developing countries in other parts of the world, are given. The main objectives and limitations in the scope of the book are spelt out.
