‘Old and new approaches’ compare the traditional approach to the cliometric approach of McDonald and Snooks. The discussion of the traditional literary approach focuses on the work of J. H. Round, F. W. Maitland, and H. C. Darby. It is argued that a new approach involving the use of economic theory and the (then) latest computerized statistical techniques, would be able not only to organize the vast data of DB more effectively but also to arrive at a very different interpretation of the nature of the Anglo‐Norman economy.
