Hugo Grotius and International Relations
Publisher:
Oxford University Press

This is an introductory guide to further reading on the themes explored in this book. It includes some, but by no means all, of the works referred to in the chapters in this book. It is concerned only with works bearing on the subject of Grotius and International Relations, and the emphasis is on those written in English. Standard general works on international law, the history of international law, political philosophy, and the history of ideas have in most cases been omitted. A useful bibliography of major pre‐ and post‐Grotian works in international law is included in Haggenmacher, Grotius et la doctrine de la guerre juste (Paris, 1983).

For further references the reader can consult works listed in the bibliographical section below. These works have been very helpful in the preparation of this select bibliography; we gratefully acknowledge also the kind assistance provided by the staff of the Grotius Institute in The Hague.

Relatively few articles are listed here. Several important articles and essays are included in the collections of essays listed in sections 3 and 4 below. Periodicals containing germane articles have included:

  • Bibliotheca Visseriana (Leiden, 1923–64).

  • Grotiana (1928–47).

  • Grotiana, NS (Assen, 1980–) (cited in this bibliography simply as Grotiana).

  • Grotian Society Papers (Madras, 1964; The Hague, 1968 and 1972).

  • Grotius annuaire international (The Hague, 1913–48).

  • Transactions of the Grotius Society (London, 1916–59).

This select bibliography is divided into the following sections: 1. Grotius' Works (main editions of relevant works by Grotius, and English translations of these works); 2. Bibliographical Works; 3. Biographical works (accounts of Grotius' life and works in the context of the seventeenth century); and 4. Secondary Literature (works dealing with Grotius' ideas and bearing on international relations issues: (a) books and (b) articles).
